LONJSKO POLJE

The nature park Lonjsko polje, as a wetland, is considered to be the most endangered habitat in the world. It is the largest protected wetland area, not only in Croatia, but in the entire Danube tributary area. It is included in the list of so called Ramsar sited of international importance, especially as a habitat of wetland birds. According to the criteria from the European Union Birds Directive, this area is an Important Bird Area – IBA. It is mostly made up of three fields (polje): Lonjsko, Mokro, and Poganovo polje.

The rivers Sava, Una, Kupa, Lonja, and Strug meet in the nature park. Due to their very complex dynamics, flooding in this area is very unpredictable, so it must be considered as a possibility throughout the year. The water level of Sava downriver from Sisak can rise up to 10 m! If the water level in all the mentioned rivers rises suddenly, large amounts of water meet and cause flooding. The central Posavina area can accept an enormous amount of two billion cubic metres of water. So the water rules over Lonjsko polje and even the local population have accepted its rule.

The activities of the Nature Park Lonjsko polje are primarily focused on the protection, preservation, and promotion of the basic natural and cultural values of the Park. The first educational programmes for children have been designed, and the Park also offers professional tours for its visitors. Professional and scientific research takes place in the Park, along with educational and professional workshops, meetings, and other events.

TOPUSKO

The settlement Topusko is located in the valley of the river Glina in the hilly area between Zrinska and Petrova gora. It can be assumed that the thermal springs have always attracted people, so the traces of inhabitants reach far back in history. The oldest traces of habitation in the area take us back to the year 3000 BC. Evidence of that are the findings from prehistory located near the village of Velika Vranovina, where the remains of Illyrian settlements were found.

Thermal water and its medicinal applications are effective for a wide range of illnesses. The latest research regarding the medicinal properties of the water has classified the quality of the water as one of the best out all the thermal spas in Europe. The water temperature is from 56°C to 72°C. Along with hot water treatments, this spa offers mud (flower) treatments.

The “Topusko” spa included two hotels, “Toplica” and “Petrova gora”, with the capacity of 520 beds with much additional content (services and recreational content).

MOSLAVINA

Vinske ceste (wine roads) are a special form of sale for the products made at the wine growing area, in which the rural agricultural farms, wine producers, and other participants, joined together under the name Vinske ceste, sell their products, especially wine and traditional products from their local area. What certainly makes them special is the nature that surrounds the roads and the natural, cultural, and traditional values they contain.

Moslavina is a famous wine growing area, where the growing of wine grapes began during the Roman times, and the growing tradition has been maintained until today. This is the home country of the genuine wines Moslavac and Škrlet, which is most sought after, because it can only be grown in Moslavina, as well as the wines Pinot Blanc, Riesling (Graševina), and the red wine Frankovka.

CITY OF SISAK

THE FIRST SETTLEMENT IN THE LOCATION WHERE SISAK IS SITUATED TODAY ORIGINATES FROM THE BRONZE AGE, ABOUT 2000 YEARS BC. IN THE EARLY IRON AGE, FROM THE 9TH TO THE 5TH CENTURY BC, THERE WAS A POPULATED SETTLEMENT HERE THAT THE OLDEST RECORDS FROM ANTIQUITY ARE REFERRING TO AS KOLAPIJANE. WITH THE ARRIVAL OF THE CELTIC TRIBE OF TAURISCI, AFTER THE 5TH CENTURY BC, THE WRITERS FROM ANTIQUITY ARE MENTIONING THE LATE IRON AGE SETTLEMENT CALLED SEGESTICA AND THE PEOPLE SEGESTOI OR SEGESTIKOI, IN CROATIAN SEGEŠĆANI. THE ROMAN ARMY ATTEMPTED TO CONQUER THEM DURING THE 2ND CENTURY BC, WHICH WAS COMPLETED BY OCTAVIAN, THE FUTURE FIRST ROMAN EMPEROR AUGUSTUS, IN 35 BC.
